Budva in the past and today

B U D V A    I N    T H E   P A S T

Name Budva for the first time was mentiond in V century B.C. by Sophokle. Butua, as Budva was called in that time, was founded by the Ilyrians, and was under the Ilyrian rule until 168 B.C. When the Roman Emipre took control under the Town and kept it under them during the whole period, till the Roman Emipre exsisted. During the the period of Plinije Junior (I and II century), Budva is mentioned as oppidium civium Romanorum, which means a city with privileged status of Roman Empire. The traces of this antique town and now days lay under the buidlings of medieval period, and are under the protection of the Montenegrin law.

In the mediavale period Budva was first under the rule of Byzantia, than Duklja and serbian mediavale state. During this period, because of many feud fights in Zeta, the rulers of Montenegro where changed very fast, until it in 1442 year finaly felt under the Venezian Republic. The number of conquariors didnt stop there, after the falling of Venezians, the rulers where changed many times in that period, Austria (two times) and France.

Considering the fact that during its history Budva was destroyed many times (841. 1571, 1979), still there are a lot of cultural and historical buildings of great vallue left i Budva.

The tourism in Budva is considred to have started in 1923, and since than the number of the guests who decided to visit one of the most beautiful cities of Montenegro has been rising every year, and so on and on again. Unique beauty of sun, sea and the magnificient beaches, with a total length of 12 km., proves the synonyme of "Metropole of tourism" to be right.
