Podgorica

Podgorica - Montenegro

Welcome to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, lying at the banks of six rivers, turning into a large city and an economic, industrial and trade centre, the traffic node, the seat of many state and national bodies, the institutions of science, health and culture, the media, archives, libraries, galleries, museums…

LOCATION

The town itself is located 44 m above sea level and has an excellent geographical position, in the vicinity of both the sea and winter resorts. It has some 150.000 inhabitants, while whole municipality covers the area of 1492 km2 and has the population of 177,403. The fact that its location is ideal for the development of a town is proved by its two millennium old past, having changed its name five times in the course if history. At the mouth of river Ribnica into Moraca there used to be a Roman caravan station Birziminium superseded by Slavic settlement Ribnica.

The name Podgorica was mentioned in written documents for the first time in 1326. From 1946 to 1992 it was called Titograd, then again Podgorica. When it was conquered by the Turks (1474), they built fortress called depedogen, around which as oriental-looking town was built. It was liberated by Montenegrins in 1878. According to its climate, Podgorica is Mediterranean town. Air masses from the sea, coming through Bojana and Skadar lake, bring the Mediterranean climate changed somewhat by the influence of its mountainous hinterland. Its rivers give Podgorica a special charm and beauty, their canyons make it peculiar and diverse terrain features of formidable beauty make it a tourist attraction.
